i consider myself fortunate since i started during the "oh yeah, i've heard
of linux..... um, what the hell is it?" days... around RH5.1 ... one
person i knew of actually knew anything about linux (until i found this
group!)... sure, there were some nice GUI tools, but i ended up having to
do enuf of it the dirty way (or rather extra-dirty way, since I had to fight
the non-standard RH way of doing things) that I got sick of RPM's... that's
why i tried debian... but I got tired of not being able to run the 'latest
and greatest' w/o having to do things that (at that time) i didn't
understand completely... so slack was the one for me... compiled
everything but the most important things myself (horked my system trying to
upgrade GCC once, so i never tried again!! :^ )

personally, FreeBSD is my favorite, since everything is (can be) compiled
from source, but it's still managed as packages (ie: if you want to remove
something, it's as simple as a 'pkg_delete
<pkg_name_installed_from_ports_source_tree>')... BUT, since my workstation
is so pathetically slow (P200), running things in linux compatability mode
(ie: Netscape or Opera) makes my system even slower than Windows XP! : ^ )
so, until i can get an upgrade, i've just been using Mandrake, since it's
easy to install/manage w/o having to compile things from source... and i can
run native linux apps... well, natively...

also, i could never get Konqueror to recognize my Netscape plugins, which
really made browsing some of my favorite sites a real bore/chore... if
anyone's gotten this to work in FreeBSD, i'd love to know how! : ^ )

i think my server / firewall will remain FreeBSD... i like how things are
managed... and even on my old 486 things work (somewhat) well! : ^ ) tho'
i just inherited a P120 from a friend, so "maybe" that will help it out
some! : ^ )

P.S. IIRC, Jon, you were the one who actually convinced me to give Debian a
try! : ^ )
