I've been running KDE 2.0 on Debian since just before it was officially
released.  I think the big issue is the gcc library used to compile it. (The old
lib5 vs lib6 issue) So if you use pre-compiled binaries, then you will have to
make sure it's compiled for your library version.  I know there's .rpm's for
RedHat and .deb's for Debian. Variants of those can probably use the same
binaries, provided all dependancies are met.  Otherwise it's 'roll-your-own'
time.
