In my experience, Quantum and Maxtor are (sorry to say this...) the worst
brands still in existance.  :-)  Connor was worse, but they're (thankfully)
out of business now.

Of the two, I'd say Quantum is better than Maxtor usually.

I really like Fujitsu for IDE hard drives, although I'm sure you can find
someone who will swear they suck, too.

I also like Western Digital and Seagate for IDE drives.  I have less
experience with SCSI.  I think Quantum may actually make some decent SCSI
hard drives (I have a 2.2gb Quantum SCSI hard drive I got for free... have
no problems with it :-)

I got the 10.2gb Western Digital drive that I use in my workstation about
6-8 months ago for $140.  Then about 3-4 months ago I got a 17.2gb Fujitsu
drive for another computer... spent $135 on that, I think. :-)

Before you buy a new drive, go ahead and run fsck on the drive... it's
possible it's just FS corruption.  But don't hold your breath is my advice.
