it's the windows demo.  it's a self extracting zip.
it started out as your q2-314-demo-x86.exe.
i copied it to a dos directory as quake2.exe.
and extracted it with wine ./quake2.exe

it tries to create a directory with a space in the name.
i was not sure if this was going to create a problem so 
i removed the space.

then copied the required files to my linux partition.
