ok by the numbers:
Mandrake 6.0 from Maximum Linux magazine
running on my new machine, a AMD 350 with 32 meg of ram
4meg S3 virge pci

quake file were down loaded from:
ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/idgames/idstuff/quake2/q2-314-demo-x86.exe
(windos demo)
ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/idgames/idstuff/quake2/unix/quake2-3.20-6.i386.rpm
(linux binary)

the windows demo was a 38 meg all nighter.
the linux rpm was 5.8 meg, not as bad.

i extracted the demo with wine.
and copied the required files over to
/usr/local/games/quake2
per the instruction at:
http://www.linuxquake.com/howto/Quake-HOWTO-2.html

remember, I'm doing the demo version install.

aside from the slower speed, i've had fewer problems with
Q2.

hope that helps

Oh I've slipped the surly bonds of dos
and danced the skies on LINUX silvered wings.
