also to run it do:

cd /usr/local/games/quake2
/usr/local/games/quake2/quake2 +set vid_ref soft

for svga version

this can be done either at a Xterm or a virtual console.
if you run it from X it will switch to a console on it's
own.

don't panic when it goes black for a minute.
it takes a while to load.

that's everything i can think of.
