Hey Fritz,
I've got the latest CD dist of RedHat at home (and I live in Newton). Send
me an email if you want to borrow them.

Subject: [aclug-L] How do I dowload RedHat?
My apologies for asking such a basic question. Perhaps there is an FAQ
somewhere to which you can direct me.
I would like to install Linux on my machine at home. I came to the
installfest, but foolishly did not budget enough time. Now I am
determined to install on my own. I have access to a good connection and a
CD burner at work, so I plan to burn my own copy of the RedHat CD's and
install from them.
I have read RedHat's on-line installation instructions. They say, "It's
entirely possible to install Red Hat Linux using a CD created by another
company, or even via FTP." Sadly, they neglect to give further
instructions on that score.
I realize it would be more efficient for me to buy the Redhat CD's and
manual in the store. Nevertheless, I am strongly disinclined to spend any
money on a free product. My time and pain count for nothing. Besides
which, I am sure I will learn more from installing the hard way.
I have visited the RedHat FTP site (or rather, mirror sites) and I do not
find any CD images. (Is there such a thing as a CD image, like there is a
disk image?) I tried to download the entire directory tree, but WS_FTP
blows up on symbolic links. The only thing I was able to do successfully
was make a boot disk from the disk image.
On the RedHat site says, "We include the exact source that was used to
build the distribution on the second CD of every box set." Does this
imply that I myself must build the distribution to put on my CD's rather
than simply downloading it?
How would you advise me?
Thanks in advance,
-Fritz
(I am reminded of the unfortunate aspiring writer who attended a clinic in
order to be advised by the great Harlan Ellison. Mr. Ellison's only
advice: "Do yourself and the reading public a favor. STOP WRITING!"
I, like the nameless bad writer of the story, will not be deterred. :-)
