This sounds like a good idea, but why should they care how much bandwidth a
particular "house" is using (man, I will probably get slammed for that
statement)?. Anyway... the info at http://www.mmckansas.com indicates
cable modem speeds of (upto) 42Mbs, however, it connects to your PC (hub,
Linux router/IPFirewall/whatever) via 10BaseT so the most one house could
use is 10Mbs... unless the house has several cable modems. If you get
several cable modems, I am sure that MMC will be able to tell this by the
MAC address (or whatever equivalent a cable modem uses).
Comments? (please be gentle).

There is no real way for them to know if you are masquarading, it all
looks like one machine to them. They may get you for using "too much
bandwidth" and throttle your connection, but they won't know how many
machines you have behind the masquarade box.
I suppose you could tell them, but why not just wait for them to ask?
I'd ask them about any policies reguarding bandwidth usage. Cable
modems have great bandwidth, but I've heard that some companies throttle
their coustomers if they reach a pre-set bandwidth usage. Check it out
and let us know... Maybe we can buy a block of service as a group and
get a discount....
You know... That might be an idea to follow up on... If we got together
as a group of Linux users then offered a local (or national) ISP to take
care of technical support for a block of users (linux based of course)
and asked them for a discounted rate.... They might just go for it. We
would have to supply the technical support for linux connections, but we
do that anyway right now...
Anybody want to try it?
