You should have something logged in a file like /var/log/ppp.log or
perhaps /var/log/messages that will hopefully shed some light on what
it's doing. If not, see if there is a way to turn on PPP and chat
debugging.

Right.

That's OK; it would be silly for me to presume that Debian is the best
for everyone. Different people have different needs and different
distributions cater to those particular needs. I can always tell you
how to do things in the generic Linux way (editing config files, using
command-line tools) but I can't help with any higher-level config
tools except with Debian, since I really don't have the experience
with those higher-level tools in other dists to be of a whole lot of
use.

There are several people here that run RedHat. At the moment, I would
estimate the sum of experience would perhaps be greater with Debian
since several thousand area people use it at WSU and it is what we
install. However, RH has quite a large following too. It may be
necessary for you to join a RedHat list somewhere (I would presume
RedHat.com has some) for some of these questions, and of course,
report back to us on the solution if you don't mind. The posts to
this list get archived so people in the future can check what's been
said in the past and maybe find the solution there.

Thanks,
John
