Yeah, gmail sucks for that, I hate it too :(
It's not a problem with groups though, since I get my own messages back from
it when I don't send from gmail.
Just out of curiosity: if you send mail from gmail to a mailman list, you
actually get your mail back, but not on groups?

I wish I could help more, but I'm not a groups expert, I'm just on a couple of
groups lists myself while I'm on many more mailman lists.
Personally I'm fine with either solution since both seem to work with my
mail setup.
