Thanks for all the help guys.  Right now for my gateway I don't want to
learn that much about linux.  I have my main computer that will be
running linux in the future that is when I will fully start learning it.
I figure then I would start with something like mandrake or redhat.
Something that does most things for you but still give you the control I
need.  For my current project I will check out fraizer and see what it
does.  Thanks again for the help.

If your primary concern is functionality, Frazierwall will do what you
need pretty painlessly.  You will need two NICs.
If the educational experience is more important, you'll learn more by
installing Linux on a hard drive, and going through all the steps
involved.
You _can_ get by with just one NIC, but you lose any security advantages
that a firewall would provide, and it's a pain to set up.  It's worth
the
investement in another $5 network card to avoid this :)
And it will work fine with Windows XP, or any other OS that uses IP.
