    The best fix for this IMHO is to go with a distribution that uses 
'deb's'.  The main distro for this would be Debian.  I know several 
members that run this and have no problems with upgrades, etc...  When I 
started running linux I installed Redhad 5.0 and ran into some problems 
getting what I wanted installed using the rpm format.  It seemed to me 
that the rpm format has problems with dependency resolution.  Hence I 
now run Debian 3.0 and use apt-get or dselect for installing and daily 
upgrades to the system software.  'apt-get' is your friend.
