One trick for USB/fireware hard drives...
Most of them are just IDE drives with a USB/firewire interface attached.
If you need one, and want to save some money, buy the cheapest one you can
(probably 10gb or so), then buy a separate hard drive, take apart the
USB/firewire drive, and stick in a larger drive. You'll save yourself some
money.
It still costs more than just a standard hard drive... but if you need the
portability of an extrnal drive, you might as well save some money :)

P.S. Make sure the USB/firewire drive you buy is actually an IDE drive
first! And check to see if it's a 3.5" or 2.5" (laptop) drive, because
that will effect what you replace it with (as well as the price you pay for
the replacement drive)
