Start up tcpdump on another machine on the network, then do the ping from
mail to cad1. This will tell you if the traffic is getting to the network or
not.

If I ping 192.168.168.1 (cad1) from mail, the same thing happens.  The ping
command shows a reply, but nothing is going out on the network.  Somehow it
is being routed internally.  I ran ifconfig on cad1 and it shows an IP
address of 192.168.168.1; ifconfig on mail shows an IP address of
192.168.168.2.
