Here are some questions that might help myself, others, or even you
find the answer to the question?

1. What kind of machine is the one that you can't ping? Windows,
   Linux, Mac, etc.

2. Are both machines on the same Ethernet segment (plugged in to the
   same hub/switch)? Is there any kind of router or firewall between
   the two?

3. What are the IP addresses and net masks of each?

4. When you try to ping the one machine, does it show up in the arp
   table on the samba server (just type arp at a root prompt)?

5. Can you establish any type of connection between the two, in either
   direction? Like telnet, ssh, or something else?

6. What type of name resolution do you use? Host files, or DNS. Are
   the host/DNS records setup correctly for both machines?

That might be a start...
