[Freeciv] Technology

When I start a game, I build settlers in every city as described in every
tutorial. I use them to build cities that do not overlap. When my island is
full of them, I build buildings and some wonders and discover the sea with the
ships I can build. But my AI opponent always builds wonders before because I
discover technology too slow. I do everything for my technology, but the AI is
always faster. So sometime the AI comes and attacks my cities that have very
old units succesfully. What can I do to discover technology faster?
