This was actually my first thought, but on my system the GIMP will
only grab the part of the window that lies on the screen - making the
window larger by dragging its corner across my virtual desktop just
results in part of the window getting cut off.
What I really need is a way to create an X display that is scaled -
where windows and decorations and everything are reduced, so an
enormous desktop and its windows can fit on my screen. I will have to
investigate whether there is a way to run programs inside proxy X
servers that reduce the magnification or something.
