Why these changes? I would understand:

"#ifndef NDEBUG" but not "#ifdef DEBUG".
I'm not really knowledgeable about autoconf, but what is the difference between these two? Doesn't NDEBUG <=> !DEBUG ? Or are there three choices: NDEBUG, <nothing>, and DEBUG?
