Proposal:

Why not avoid the ':' problem entirely by assigning a unique number or
character to each player, and send messages as follows:

0 Frederick
1 Robot
2 Foobar
3 You get the idea
...
a Wow, the 11th player
...
z My god, we've got 36 of them!
etc.

Message to player 0:

m0Hello

Sends "Hello" to player 0.

Message to everyone:

mAHello Everyone

Sends "Hello Everyone" to all players.  Note that this system requires
that we reserve the "A" character for the public channel.

This lets us use any names we like, while allowing us to use any and all
character combinations in our messages.

Sound workable?
