You're trying to do PPP over the connection?

There's no reason you shouldn't be able to... I just didn't know that's what
you were trying to do.

What you describe sounds like a possible IRQ conflict... Are you sure
nothing else is using the same IRQ ttyS1 is using (IRQ3 would be normal).

Also... are you using a null-modem cable, or a standard serial cable?

And are both ends attempting to communicate at 38400?  And do both ends
have at least 16450 UARTs (I would assume they do if they're 486's or
newer).
