Well, you can't really set a virtual console (Alt+F4) to go over a serial
port.  You can create an ADDITIONAL "virtual console" on the serial port.

I've done this with mgetty before, and a null modem cable (you can also do
it with a modem or nearly any other type of serial device that connects to a
terminal of some sort).

Just configure mgetty on ttyS1 (edit /etc/inittab, refer to the mgetty man
page for details), then use a terminal program such as Hyperterminal, Telix,
minicom, etc (depending on which OS your laptop uses) and log in as though
you were telnetting to the Linux machine.
