OK, if it's a 3-button mouse, it's not a Microsoft one. My guess is
that, if it's a serial mouse, it would be either Logitech or Mouse
Systems protocol. If it's a PS/2 mouse, you would generally pick the
PS/2 protocol.
If this still doesn't work, try the ChordMiddle option. If that
doesn't work, you can try Emulate3Buttons as a last resort -- in that
case, pressing the left and right buttons emulate a press of the
middle one.
Also note that on some mice with 4 buttons, the "4th" button may
appear to X as the middle button, instead of what would normally
appear as the middle button.
