Subject: [aclug-L] Topic for April 5 meeting
Hello everyone,
In the shuffle when I've been rearranging things on my LAN, I appear
to have lost my file in which I keep a list of requested meeting
topics. Here's what I have from memory. Please reply to me with
additions/corrections as soon as convenient so that I can get a topic
ready for April 5.
Here's the list from memory. I've tried to include the pros and cons
of each as I recall them.
* Network setup and installation
Commentary: We've already had an event like this, but it's been
awhile and maybe we ought to have a repeat
* Upgrading your Debian 2.0 machine to Debian 2.1
Commentary: I prefer to avoid something that is specific to only
one distribution
* Programming languages: Tcl/Tk, Perl/Tk, etc.
Commentary: We've had a talk on Perl, and a talk on development
in general, but no talk on Perl/Tk development in particular.
Unfortunately, the topic is a fairly complex one and probably
wouldn't fit well into a single evening
* SQL databases in Linux
Commentary: an interesting topic, and a SQL primer could be
fit into the evening alongside a talk about setting up PostgreSQL.
The downside is that it's a more technical talk, and we've got a
lot of people from the install that could benefit more from
something else.
* An explanation of the ideas behind the Open Source/Free Software
movement and a discussion about them, and why Linux has been
successful because of this.
Commentary: this topic is loaded with controversy and doesn't
have an immediate practical application to many people, but could
be interesting nonetheless.
* Linux security
Cmmentary: this has been done before, too. A full treatment
of the topic can't really occur in one evening, and a summary
has hard (but possible) to do
* The State of Linux: an evening where there is a talk on what
has been going on in the Linux community and where the community
is headed.
Commentary: again, not a lot of immediate practical applications,
but again, it's interesting.
Please send me your suggestions and comments! Every one of these
items has been suggested by somebody, and I want to make sure that our
meetings are useful for as many people as possible.
