don't panic!

first:    write down any thing you might see on the main chip for your card.
            it never hurts.

second:    most distributions do a nice job of auto probing.
                you probably won't need step one.  but it never hurts.

third:        if it won't auto-probe and the stuff on the side of the chip won't help
                let me know and i'll bring one of my old 1 meg cards from my junk box
                to the next meeting.

never got Xwindows or Xfree86 (whatever it's called) to work last time,
but ultimately the GUI interface is what I want.

Any suggestions before I get started would be appreciated.  It's still
not too late for me to turn back. so if the reply is "abandon all hope
ye who enter here",  I guess I can give it up.  Seriously, let me know
of  any specific sources on the internet that would help me get it set
up as indicated
