ctrl-alt-f1 - ctrl-alt-f6 (either ctrl-alt-f7 or f8 is your xsession if
you have X running) will take you to different virtual consoles.
ctrl-alt-f1, is the one your normally on, so any of the others should be
open. (rarely does ssomething lock up your whole machine with linux, so
that should have worked)
