Any Linux distribution that I am aware of will have both the /dev/cuax and
/dev/ttySx (where x = 0-3) devices. The /dev/ttySx devices send raw data
to the serial port "uncooked", whereas the /dev/cuax devices will modify
things a bit. I have had better luck with using the /dev/ttySx devices in
most cases.

Does the modem happen to be a US Robotics WinModem. WinModem being the key
word here. If so, you are out of luck. A WinModem will NOT work with
Linux. It requires special drivers that work only with Windows operating
systems. I can imagine that you would get the errors that you are getting
if you are using a WinModem.

That is a good idea. See what happens.
