I suspect, based on what you've said, that the CD detected the presence of a
swap partition on your HD, and utilized it... and thus was able to run with
less than the "minimum" amount of RAM.

If you booted that CD on a machine with 32mb RAM and no swap partition, I
suspect it would choke.
