I had DSL with static IP in Wichita some time ago, and it was seamless
and fast.
However, that was before SBC went to PPPOE for the connections. I tried
to set up PPPOE when I moved and had some real problems. Could not even
connect until I had set up a M$ windows machine with their software and
never managed to get the Linux to connect.
I scrapped the DSL and went with cable because SBC did not support Linux
and I got tired of not being able to connect Linux to the internet with
their service. I refused to limit myself to a Win98SE machine with
connection sharing as the internet gateway.
I know some have been able to use Linux and PPPOE, but have been told by
all I talked to that it is a pain and not as good as the original DHCP
connections.
DHCP is used on the cable internet connections and I have never had a
problem setting it up or connecting.
