A LOCAL printer does not rely on the network at all.

These symptoms lead me to believe that print spooler for lp0 is defined
as a network printer.

I would trouble shoot this by first using the gui printtool and removing
the definitions for ALL printers. Restart lpd as the last step of this.

Then go to /var/spool/lpd and remove everything under there if there is
anything remaining.

finally, rerun the printtool and define a new printer making sure it is
set as a local printer when defining it.

NOTE: As part of setting up the printer you MUST select a driver. I
recently set up one and failed to define the driver. I had similar
results in that it printed (apparently) but nothing was actually sent to
the printer.
When I went back and edited the configuration to put in the
driver it then worked perfectly.
