have you tried putting the old drive back in?
that might help determine if it's the drive or the board.
sounds like the default kernal that you are installing does not have
(correct) support for your larger drive. i had a similar issue a while back.
i went from a 2.4 kernal to a 2.2 kernal and it went away.
can you boot with either a 2.2 or a more recent 2.4?
