Why not do a repair install of XP (easily done with XP install disk)and
then repartition the hard drive and install Linux

It can, I have done it before. This isn't the problem.

Would be nice, but I don't have the adapter I once had (2.5" to 3.5" hd 
adapter) so this really isn't an option at the moment. 

What I am looking for is a way to just dump it to something else via a 
network. This requires a) ntfs support b)network support c)some data
transfer 
utility (which can operate on just about any protocal)
