Well this is the key right here. While your modem may have been
connected to the ISPs modem, you did not have PPP completely
negotiated. This completely explains the problem. Now, what is causing
it. Look in your log files (maybe /var/log/messages) for statements
about PPP when you try to connect. That might give us an idea as to
where in the PPP process things are breaking. In a previous message
you sent a copy of your options file. You might also give us a look at
your chat script. You mentioned that you where using CHAP. Is that
really the case? Most ISPs just you PAP authentication.
