Or to put it differently, we morally approve of you using screenshots from
our web page in your book. (There was no screenshot attached to your
email, but nevermind.) A reference to www.freeciv.org as citation would be
good.

Whether there could be legal implications from using a screenshot from a
GPLed game in a book is something you will have to take up with your
publisher. We cannot give you legal advice, special permission, or grant
exemption from this license.

AFAIK use of screenshots in this way constitutes fair use. But I am not a lawyer.
Only thing I can say is that I won't sue you for it. :-)
