I was playing a fairly ordinary game on Win98SE (local server, 1 AI
opponent) when the science dialog popped up, and before it had finished
drawing, the client crashed.

Don't know what year this was. I have the server-saved savegames.

2.0.0 (release) non-Gtk client, freshly installed from
Freeciv-2.0.0-win32-setup.exe.

The client doesn't appear to have dropped a CIVCLIENT.RPT, so the
attached screenshot is all I have. Here is a transcript of the visible
debugging information:

CIVCLIENT caused a general protection fault
in module USER.EXE at 000c:0000107b.

This crash report looks very similar to that in #12784 (same EIP,
not dissimilar registers)

It occurs to me to wonder whether this could be another manifestation of
the dialog flakiness of PR#12252. (Although I've not yet seen that with
any more recent version that that noted in the PR, and in particular not
in the 2.0.0 release.)
