You are arguing tautologies. The people for whom the current version
has no value, are not using it.

My basic point is, it is foolish to wring your hands to the Nth degree
about whether people will use something or not, or whether the
demographics will change or not. Life is change. The important
consideration is, does a change meet *your* goals? And, should you
decline and obstruct change just because something *doesn't* meet your
goals?

You brought up OpenGL and .NET. If those are your goals, then they Can
Be Done (tm). If those are *not* your goals, then you're offering a
strawman. You shouldn't bring it up as proving or disproving something.

OpenGL and .NET may very well be *someone's* goals, and if those
someones want to undertake the work, it may indeed be well-received by
lots and lots of people. It's not how I personally would do it, I'd use
Nebula.

But the goal of integrating Freeciv with 3D is certainly a legitimate
one, in *many* people's minds. As is obvious from the vast majority of
things shipped in the commercial game industry to consumers.

For the record, 3D is not one of my priorities *at this time*. Of
course with 11 years of 3D graphics experience, it's work I'm perfectly
capable of undertaking. But I'm a Game Designer first and foremost.
Recently I changed my domain name from 3DProgrammer.com to
indiegamedesign.com to reflect my actual priorities. And, honestly, for
now I'll be saving my 3D "wad" for Ocean Mars.

Cheers, www.indiegamedesign.com
