I've tested the patch on NetBSD 1.6, and found that it doesn't
join the multicast group automatically like Linux does. If I set the
multicast group to the all-hosts address (224.0.0.1) it would work
without problems.

I think the all-hosts address still seems like the most portable option.
So except for the bandwidth usage (which is negligible), are there any
known problems with multicasting to the all-hosts address?
