There are more than three variants.

I remember that discussion too. Other people were having it. The outcome
was irrelevant (sorry). The people who mattered at the time (that being Ben
and I) had already decided on the above because of the problems that arise
exactly as you describe. I believe that I told people so, but they thought
about all the cool stuff that could be done without any worry of the
practicalities.

PS: and practicalities is where the PPOV dicussion should be about now.
    I'm leaning back to SPOV (I guess I'm truly on the fence)
