Always make sure attribution of changes is appropriately flagged. If so,
there is usually no problem if the issue is clear and not in previous 
dispute.

This is either done as a separate patch, or in a jointly authored one with
an appropriate comment explanation and name if you haven't got joint 
acknowledgement.

You may often see things like ...
"This feature is heavily based on the code of <author>, but any remaining
 bugs and deficiencies are mine. <editor>"
