True, we do have that problem. But as I pointed out, it [the US Bill of
Rights/ Constitution/ etc] seems to be the first _persistent_ and still
existing declaration that church and state are to be completely
independent in a country still honoring that. A system which failed
has, by natural selection, been deemed a failure, regardless of how
good or enlightened the temporary state was.
AFAIK, many European countries still have a "national religion" which is
subsidized by taxes (Germany comes to mind specifically, I'm not sure of
others).
