I think you aren't understanding the problem.  Gdk is a blatant copy of
the X API for the most part.  Including this bit.  Other API's have
different primitives and/or bitmap size limits, etc.  This may make
implementing Gdk on those API's non-trivial (and make those s-l-o-w).
