You know, font-lock-maximum-size is set to a low value by default for
very good reasons.  Whether you believe it or not, that reason is not
just to annoy you: font-lock consumes a lot of resources, particularly
if you're using the full bells and whistles.  I think that the emacs
maintainers know what they're doing, and that there's no point in
trying to outsmart them.  I also think that the pofiles are not likely
to balloon in the immediate future.  Half a megabyte would be about
right, I think.

When I installed Debian two years and a couple of versions ago, I had
no experience with any unixoid systems whatsoever.  Somehow I managed.
I'm not blaming you for using SuSE, though.

Don't blame me.  You might want to consider reporting this as a bug.
The emacs maintainers genreally take all bugs quite seriously,
including documentation bugs.  Use M-x report-emacs-bug to make a bug
report, or look in the documentation.
