Disclaimer: I could be completely out to lunch, but...

On this topic of openGL things .. i'm reading over a poor connection,
so I'm only skimming and someone might have mentioned it, but .. one
trick to save some time on animation: render the scene (or at least
the things that don't change) and grab it, then paste that into the
background and draw on top of it. Naturally, when the viewpoint
changes, you have to redraw the background, but most of the time when
I'm playing freeciv, I'm not moving the viewpoint, just the units. :)
The only drawback I can think of right now is the extra overhead to
draw the background the first time.
