I wrote the attached perl script [1] to check for some errors in
po file translations, in particular printf-styule format mismatches
compared to the untranslated strings.

Errors detected (for freeciv-1.9.2) are as follows: ({} are my comments)

ENTRY: (de.po)
  msgid "Game: You acquire Future Tech %d from %s."
  msgstr "Spiel: Zukunftstechnologie %s von %s erhalten."
*** Format mismatch: %s [msgstr:1] vs %d [msgid:1]
ENTRY: (es.po)
  msgid "Too few starts %d (need at least %d)."
  msgstr "Demasiado pocos puntos de partida %s (se necesita por lo menos %d)."
*** Format mismatch: %s [msgstr:1] vs %d [msgid:1]
ENTRY: (es.po)
  msgid "%2d: The %s City of %s of size %d, with %d wonders"
  msgstr "%02d: El ciudad %s de %s de tamao %d, con %d maravillas"
*** Format mismatch: %02d [msgstr:1] vs %2d [msgid:1]
{not really a problem, if intended; program checks for exact equality}
ENTRY: (es.po)
  msgid "Game: Learned %s. Scientists choose to research Future Tech. 1."
  msgstr "Juego: Aprendido Tecnologa Futura 1. Investigando Tecnologa futura
%d."
*** Format mismatch: %d [msgstr:1] vs %s [msgid:1]
ENTRY: (fr.po)
  msgid ""
  "Bribe unit for %d gold?\n"
  "Treasury contains %d gold."
  msgstr ""
  "Corrompre %s pour %d or?\n"
  "Les finances contiennent %d or."
*** Format mismatch: %s [msgstr:1] vs %d [msgid:1]
*** Format number mismatch for %d [msgstr:3]
ENTRY: (no.po)
  msgid "Game: A%s %s %s stole Future Tech. %d from %s."
  msgstr "Spill: En %2$s %3$s stjal Framtidsteknologi %$4d fra %$5s."
*** Format mismatch: %$4d [msgstr:3] vs %s [msgid:3]
*** Format mismatch: %$5s [msgstr:4] vs %d [msgid:4]
{number should be _before_ $, not after}

[1] Maybe re-inventing wheels, since I wouldn't be surprised if
    people had automated such checks before, but its more fun to
    create than to search! :-}
