That's because you probably have left selected the chat entry widget (see
if the chat entry widget has a thin black line around it or something like
that) when you typed something on it last time, or clicked on it.  While
the chat entry widget is left selected all keyboard input is directed to
it (otherwise you couldn't ever write anything in it could you?)

GTK+ comes by default with the following keyboard shortcuts for changing
widget selection (and i don't think they can be switched off):

left/right/up/down arrow keys (you probably have numlock off or something)
tab key

The idea is:  you have selected the chat entry line, you are supposed to
write text on it (talking to other players, etc), when you finish typing
you just press the <tab> key or something else that unselects that widget.

That's because the diagonal keys on the keypad are used for unit movement
in the game only, i.e.. GTK+ doesn't use it as a keyboard shortcut for
selecting widgets.
