AFAIK, automake hardcodes 'tar' and some other commands. Autoconf is
not system dependent, but of course uses the output from automake.
I think it's better to keep ./configure et al in cvs for now, and
raise the subject when someone has a problem. (Which anyway means they
have to run automake themselves, and overwriting the CVS files.)
