I think that usb is strictly a 98SE only.  I was always told to install
at least 98SE if usb was going to be used.

I use USB 2.0 devices under Win98se and it works fine.  But you always 
have to install the vendor's drivers for pretty much all USB devices. 
If the vendor's driver for the printer hasn't been installed, that's 
the place to start.
