        In my opinion, most LINUX users will be best served by using
kernels that come with their distribution.  I know RedHat and other
distros often patch and tweak the generic Linus-approved kernel source. 
These vendors often release updated kernels as needed.  Getting kernel
compilation and installation right is tricky.  

        On the other hand, sometimes Linux kernel compilation is required. 
For example:  suppose there is a bug in the driver for your network
card/sound card/etc. You do some research and find out there is an updated
driver in 2.4.17 (your system runs 2.4.9).  You could then download the
new kernel source and compile a new kernel for your box and hopefully it
fixes the problem.  If the problem persists, you should be able to go back
to your old kernel via multiple lilo entries.  Mike's case above is
another good reason to build your own kernel (efficiency, strip out stuff
you know you don't need).
