What I think this whole thing was (which happened to me once) is that the
partition table became corrupt. I had my table go bad by doing stupid things
with WINE (Wine is Not an Emulator).
My linux partitions were gone when a ran FDISK and listed out the table. I
fixed the problem by recreating the start and stop cylinders exactly as before
(from a previous saved print out of FDISK).  When I rebooted, ALL my data was
100% intact and everything was like it was before.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO PRINT OUT YOUR PARTITION TABLE FROM FDISK OUTPUT.
Safeguard this little piece of paper in case of emergencies. Use Toms Root
Boot Floppy to fix the table with fdisk.
