I believe you can give it a -nosound option, or something to that effect.

Check the docs--I know when I first played quake I had no soundcard, either,
and found the answer in the docs or a FAQ (included with the shareware
download).

If you should decide you want a sound card, let me know.  I'll give you one
pretty cheap (prolly $5 or so if you promise I never see it again :-)
