Playing at root doesn't make a sound card magically appear in the system. 
:-)

I *know* there is an option to disable sound... and I think it's -nosound. 
That should fix the problem.

Floppy disk tip #3: Do not fold diskettes unless they do not fit into the
drive. "Big" Diskettes may be folded and used in "Little" drives.
